    1. A "Feather-Dresser" (sometimes called "Feather Wife") was a person who cleaned and prepared feathers for sale.

    2. After James M's premature death, Amelia could well have been expected to remarry, but managed to support the substantial household herself through her own industriousness (managing a sweet shop) and the like efforts of her children and (in the case of George Arthur BROWNESS for a time), grandchildren.

    3. The spelling of Amelia's surname is inconsistent in the official records: sometimes SERLE and other times SEARLE.
